Climb?? Ahaggar Mountains

The Sahara stretches across all of North Africa, from the Atlantic to the Nile, covering 3.5 million square miles. The Ahaggar massif is composed largely of extinct volcanoes and pinnacles of naked rock. In the center of the group is a great complex of eroded volcanic crater plugs 155-miles in diameter. This oval-shaped rock-tower is called the Kouda, and includes several high peaks, including the highest in Algeria, Tahat (9,573 ft.)

Ahaggar is situated 1,000 miles south of the Mediterranean, 1.000 miles east of the Atlantic and roughly 1,000 miles north of the Bight of Benin.

Hiking and climbing here are not uncommon, but the extremely dry climate and variable temperatures can sometimes be serious challenges. Temperatures range from 10 degrees Fahrenheit at night to 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.
